In addition to injection moulding, structural foam injection (SFI), also know as structural foam moulding, is our core activity. Once again, we offer everything you need at our production site in Goirle, The Netherlands.
With our 15- to 2,100-tonne injection moulding machines, we can produce a wide range of SFI products such as plastic housings, self-supporting platforms and technical components. After production, many of our SFI components are finished with a coating of your choosing.
What is SFI (or SFM)?
Structural foam injection, also known as structural foam moulding is a technique derived from injection moulding. During the injection moulding process, a chemical foaming agent is injected into the mould to make the plastic foam. This allows us to produce thick-walled, rigid and strong products that can include a number of features. The main advantages of SFI (or SFM) over injection moulding and RIM are a better product and fewer post-production assembly activities.
Production in the Netherlands
We produce all SFI/SFM products at our own production site in the Netherlands, where we can also add a coating of your choosing. Although we often outsource the production of moulds to Asia, this does not apply to the products themselves. We deliberately choose to handle all SFI/SFM activities ourselves in order to safeguard the required quality and delivery times.
Injection moulding machines for SFI
We use top-of-the-line injection moulding machines that all feature robot extraction and the right auxiliary equipment. We process technical and high-performance plastics that may or may not be glass-filled or possess special properties. We handle our coating activities in our own high-tech paint shop.
What kinds of SFI/SFM products do we produce?
Pekago produces plastic housings and technical components for a number of sectors. We produce small foam moulded series for e.g. vision systems and the medical sector and larger series for industrial equipment and vehicles, among other things. The markets we operate in complement each other very well and are all characterised by their high demands in terms of quality and annual production volume.
A focus on large and/or coated SFI/SFM products
When it comes to SFI/SFM, our main focus is on the production of relatively large components. Think of e.g. moulded parts that require the use of machines of more than 200 tonnes or which weigh more than 200 grammes each. Additionally, we offer in-house coating services.
Plastics for Structural Foam Injection
There is a large number of different plastics suitable for SFI on the market, many of them with a variety of additions. Fact is, that only freely available plastics are used, unless we mutually agree on a bespoke speciality. This way you maintain flexibility.
